How people can find this show funny is so beyond me. It's apparently meant to be a comedy, despite the complete absence of a 'laughing track' that's found in many other sitcoms like 'How I met your mother' and 'Friends'.Modern Family throws together the biggest bunch of cliché families you've ever seen and allows us to basically watch as they go through their daily lives. We have the 2 gay guys and their kid, the Latino parents, the slightly-upper-class suburban family etc. All of which fit into their own stereotypical little category and all of which try their hardest to milk every cliché joke out that they can.I know a lot of people don't think that cliché = bad. But in this case, Modern Family isn't funny in the slightest, and the viewer is basically left to think for themselves with regards to every single supposed 'joke' as to whether or not they should have laughed.It's an incredibly 'forced' show which really throws at you pretty much every single predictable one-liner you can think of. "I'd ask you to stop mum, but you're Latino" and "This is my work--- partner.... Haha just kidding we're actually gay". The script might as well have been written by someone who has just hit puberty and has spent a few days googling "Racial stereotypes" in order to try and formulate jokes on their own.The characters depicted therein are also shallow, unrealistic (this is supposed to be a show on the evolution of 'modern families') and just plain uncaptivating. Also the self-indulging little 1 on 1 interview moments that you get with each character make it seem like you're watching a fictional Big Brother.The whole thing goes together so badly and I'm very surprised that people consider this show the 'pinnacle of comedy'. I guess they haven't seen: 'How I met your mother', '3rd rock from the sun' 'The I.T. crowd' 'The big bang theory' 'The nanny' and the original '2 and a half men'.The biggest gripe I have with this show is that it doesn't know what it wants to be. It's directed like a reality TV show with the weird shaky-cam and stupid quick over-zoomed close ups. Yet with all the ridiculously insipid one-liners and curve-ball remarks it can't remotely hope to take itself seriously because people would never say such things in the real world. Unless they were utter awkward idiots who didn't remotely know how to behave within society.The show isn't funny, it isn't interesting, it isn't even smart and that means that it isn't remotely entertaining. The characters are shallow, very unlikeable and are totally unrealistic. To be honest the only thing it succeeds in being, is a total mystery, because I don't understand how after watching almost the whole first season, how this show won a Golden Globe and got such rave reviews and praise.I guess it's just proof that people will watch, like and relate to anything these days.

I decided to check out "Modern Family" after hearing all of the critical praise about it. The show was five episodes in, so I caught up on the action online. And I must say that the acclaim is well-deserved. The show is nothing like what I'd imagined when I read about it. It is not a typical three-camera sitcom and it actually IS as gut-wrenchingly funny as people say.With any modern TV comedy, people are going to compare it with "Arrested Development", which is highly regarded as one of the greatest shows ever by many. "Modern Family" is not quite "A.D.", but I can see why some people may compare the two."Modern Family", like "Arrested Development", is a comedy about a wacky extended family that is filmed in a quasi-documentary style, similar to "The Office". The characters don't acknowledge the camera, but they do contribute "talking head" segments to supplement the action. The show is less cartoony and surreal than "Arrested Development" or "30 Rock", but the comedy can still get pretty off-the-wall.The ensemble cast is great. There are three branches of a single family. The patriarch (Ed O'Neill) has re-married, bringing a Colombian-born wife and her son into the fold. The daughter (Julie Bowen) and her husband (Ty Burrell) have three kids. The son (Jesse Tyler Ferguson) and his partner (Eric Stonestreet) have just adopted a Vietnamese baby. The show focuses mainly on the parents and how they raise their families and interact with each other in today's society.My favorite character is Phil (Burrell), who plays the dad who tries to be "hip". He means well, but he's really kind of a wimpy husband. Phil's always putting himself in awkward situations (without always realizing it) and some of his lines are hilarious. He tries so hard to be the "cool dad". Next I like Cameron (Stonestreet), who's gay and proud of it. He's sensible and sensitive and he has some great lines, too.Although I haven't really connected with the show like I have with some others (just a matter of personal style), there's no denying that "Modern Family" is an above-average comedy. It's written well, with humor sewn throughout the fabric of each episode, and each episode packs some laugh-out-loud moments. And I say this as someone who rarely actually bursts into audible laughter. (Occasionally, with shows like "A.D." or "30 Rock".) This show does it, though. Phil, in particular, has me in stitches.To give you a comparison, I'd say "Modern Family" is like a cross between "The Office" and "Arrested Development". Presented more like the former, with humor and content drifting more toward the latter. More grounded in reality than "A.D.", though, and without some of the triple-entendres and zingers.The show finds windows to sneak in some wholesome family morals like togetherness and acceptance, but the episodes always end with a laugh.But the rumors are true. "Modern Family" IS a very funny new comedy. Check it out on ABC or ABC.com if you don't believe me. (Or wherever else it's available.) It definitely should be on your radar.

With great use of comedic timing, long running "inside" jokes and a modern diverse cast of great actors Modern Family is a thoroughly enjoyable comedy series about a large and complex family in their everyday life and struggle. No character is shallow or one sided but feel human and relatable. Some episodes feel a bit gimmicky and cliche' but they are few and far between. All in al a great easily accessible show
