The actors of LOST play their parts with 100% seriousness -- no witty ironic one-liners or mugging to the camera. This approach to TV drama is a refreshing change. LOST also takes the MTV shaky camera technic to new heights. In fact, here the shaky camera shots are way overdone and soon distract from the drama.Whiplash camera movements are the least of LOST's problems. Physically, the airplane crash scene does not make sense. Instead of appearing to be the debris of a plane torn apart during a fall from 38,000 feet, or even the remains of a forward moving plane attempting a crash landing, the jumbo jet in lost appears to be cut into thirds, with the back third missing, the middle third neatly dropped 40 feet straight down, and the front third also gently dropped from a 40 foot height at another location a mile away.Also, one airplane engine does not appear to have been dropped or to have suffered from a crash at all. The smoothly running engine appears to be perfectly placed on the beach by a team of highly skilled mechanics.What is most laughable is the execution of the brief situations where characters are placed in jeopardy... A pregnant passenger is under a noisy and bending wing. Many people are around her, yet only the lead hero farthest away from the wing can here the metal give way and must do a Six Million Dollar Man 300 yard run, jumping dead bodies and debris, to rescue the expecting mother -- just in time.We see a pondering close-up shot of the airline pilot placing the radio transmitter on a chair as a clear signal that he is about to exit the show -- just as did exiting characters in all those old Irwin Allen disaster movies of the 1970's... "Here please hold this, I am about to have a sudden and violent death."A few minutes after the crash, the lead actor has a long monologue recounting a dramatic event in his character's life. What? A jumbo jet crash is so boring and mundane as to be out of mind, and an Aesop's fable memory is supposed to bring drama? LOST is brimming with laugh-out-loud stuff.Just like CASTAWAY, PANIC ROOM and other films where normal people are isolated and fighting to survive, the characters in LOST do not investigate and inventory their resources and thoughtfully attempt to make the most of them.Viewers who like the premise of LOST should check out a much better science fiction series called EARTH2 sometimes marathoned on the SF channel.

The ABC Network is beginning to annoy me with these series. But if this is all ya got..'whatcha goina do'?Hail Cable TV Networks and the fact that they are actually trying to broadcast better and more competitive series and films.I watched a few episodes of this over-hyped one, "Lost" and I prefer to stay lost. If I have nothing else to do on Wednesday...or whatever night they switch it to... but to watch this - I will take up knitting instead.Here you have a bunch of folks who get in a horrible plane crash and land in ..gosh knows where. Maybe it's the same set as the 1970's moon landing which is why they don't want anyone to know.(It's my view, the ugly folks are the ones that were sprawled across the island dead, but the amazingly great looking folks, (except for one) survive.) They try to stay alive and find out "mysterious" goings on which should keep one hooked week after week. Flashbacks, new Lost people...whatever they can pull out of your hat to make you believe that this can go on for season after season...Well, there is my initial problem. This is a hard sell to keep me coming back "week after week". "Lost" should have been a two part made for TV movie - period, and even that is being generous in my book. It kind of reminds me of shades of "Gilligans Island", "Lost in Space" and "Land of the Lost"....before they all got ridiculous. All of those series listed, started out fine. Dramatic...then as the seasons wore on, they got silly. Very silly. I see it coming for this one. Why? because this tripe has no where else to turn.The first episode was chock full of emotion, body parts, special effects and...mystery. But I couldn't see this become a "weekly series". Mini Series? Made for TV Movie? Probably. This is a Public Relations dream - the stuff Entertainment Weekly and Entertainment Tonight are made of. As far as involving drama...I guess I'm one of those 'detail in continuity' kinda folks.I just can't wait for the next JJ Abrams show that ABC will pick up that advertisers will just adore: Hmmmmm...let me take a stab at a JJ Abrams plot.....it will probably be about a poor, hunky country guy who lives in Kansas and saves up his money to go to...Chicago...or New York or...Miami and falls in love with this very beautiful, young rich woman who really leads a double life as a drug mule -- but neither he or her friends or anyone knows...but they fall in love and move to Kansas to live on his broken down farm (his dead daddy left him which has secrets of its own, ya know) and every week some of the 'wacky' neighbors come over especially one who tries to sell them something and when the audience looses interest, you kill off a main character or two -- but in all actuality is the girl's long lost father who works for the Columbian government...Oh -- just forget it, I'm Lost.

'LOST'It was promoted as JJ Abrams's new show: 'FROM THE CREATOR OF ALIAS' flashed in every trailer, meaning it has to be great. Alias is an emotional and character based drama disguised as a slick, darkly humored, kick-ass, spy thriller. Alias is genius; JJ Abrams is a genius.Apparently, all geniuses lose their marbles along the way-- case in point: Lost (Wednesdays 9/8c, ABC). I feel robbed, disappointed, angry. This crap caused the horrors of Alias season three? This is all JJ Abrams has to offer? No, if someone works at certain level of quality, it is accustom to expect that level consistently!Lost starts off with an intense close up on the hero's eye (a Matthew Fox, looking like Greg Grunberg's twin). It zooms up and we see him, lying on his back, wounded and confused. He struggles to get up. He's in a jungle: tall grass, bamboo, blue skies. In the distance there's screaming; he starts running (and running and running for too long) until he hit's the beach. It's clean, beautiful; nothing looks abnormal. Unlike Abrams pans the camera over to reveal an epic plane crash.This for the most part is all good. The camera runs around, more confused than The Hero and gives you a headache it as it attempts to capture the reactions of forty-eight survivors. African drums gets your heart pacing as The Hero attempts to help the Pregnant Woman, who's having contracts and The Wounded Man stuck under the wreckage. Abrams even gives you an explosion as someone gets sucks into the propellers. The technique is far superior to the material, along with the set. The wreckage is gorgeous, real, and highly effective.Lost is frankly it puts you to sleep. The characters are formulaic and one-dimensional. With the forty-eight survivors, there's plenty of room for character development and romance (I mean, they are on an island, what else are they going to do?) -- but from the pilot I didn't see any interesting enough to want to see developed. Jack (is his last name Bristow?), The Hero, bores me; his probable love interest, Kate (Evangeline Lilly), annoys me more.The only three characters I liked barely showed up:Number One: Terry O'Quinn -- the master himself -- lucks out and doesn't have any speaking line, rather long shot of him taking in the rain and sucking on oranges; his character is quirky (and perhaps mentally retard, perhaps). Number Two: The Pilot, Greg Grunberg. Greg Grunberg and JJ Abrams have been friends since kindergarten, and Grunberg has appeared in every Abrams production since. This time, he plays the pilot that tragically dies (but not before revealing the big hitch). I want to weep when The Pilot died -- no because I felt anything for the character, but because Greg Grunberg just got killed off and he and O'Quinn were the only ones worth watching. Furthermore, congratulations to Greg Grunberg for upstaging the lead actor in presence and talent.Number Three: The Dog. It appears as if the whole mastermind behind the strange happenings on the island is a dog. A yellow lab, who looked possessed and I wouldn't doubt if he would eat you alive. You know you have a hit show, when the most interesting aspect is the dog.The big problem: I don't care about the character. I don't care if they get off the island. I don't care if they die. I don't care if they fall in love. And coming from JJ Abrams, this is the greatest disappointment since all of his work so character based. More importantly, the dialogue is painful. 'Oh, you gotta be kidding me!' Yup, I was thinking the same thing! 'Terrific!' Nope, not exactly. 'You okay?' Jack asks the Pregnant Woman after he throws her on the ground, after surviving a plane crash? It's stupid, cliché, and not worthy.The show is not without talent; JJ Abrams knows how direct, but he was just directing really bad material. Moreover, the shear size and production cost of the show seem enormous. Unless LOST becomes the next Friends, I don't see how they could maintain their budget. And if the show has to move to soundstages, it would become laughable. I don't see it surviving more than a season.*1/2 / ****

While originally reluctant to jump on the bandwagon of watching "Lost", I accidentally caught one episode at the beginning of season 1—the one with the polar-bear—and it has had my undivided attention ever since. The show, that is. Not the polar bear. So bear (heh) with me while I throw out as much rambling, semi-coherent praise as I can muster."Lost" takes a simple idea of a passenger flight full of people crashing onto a desert island, and gradually adds extraordinary depth to its premise by exploring each character deeply and unflinchingly—what drives them, who are they? Where did they come from? It soon becomes clear that the island upon which they are stranded acts as a common denominator for many things in their lives, whether they're running away from something (Sawyer and Kate among others) or getting in touch with spirituality (Locke, Claire). But "Lost" also zooms in on the island itself and the mysterious horrors that it houses... and they all seem to be strangely connected.While television actors are not exactly known for their subtlety or dazzling acting abilities, most of the cast of "Lost" are, in truth, spectacular actors for their respective parts, projecting heart and humour in their performances. There's also a multitude of eyecandy, but not generally of the plastic Hollywood kind as most TV shows. The characters all feel very real and they are extremely compelling to watch. Their interactions rarely fall prey to predictable sappiness, petty arguments or cheesy melodrama (although they are annoyingly secretive) – these people are first and foremost trying to survive and whatever relationship appears is treated secondary to action. The realism of these characters facilitate an already well-sculptured plot. About this plot... Imagine a tree as the template plot, then the branches as subplots (in this case, one branch for every character) – well, Lost adds twigs to each branch and then tiny twigs to those twigs as other story lines. If you're a brother/sister to one of the main characters in the flashbacks, you will get your own storyline. If you're a DOG you will have your own storyline. Unless the writers manage to weave them all together into some glorious culmination in the end, they are setting themselves up. I am more than a little worried there will be some disappointing cop-out to this show, as I'm sure most people are.But assuming the writers do pull this off, "Lost" is possibly the best show ever to hit television.9/10

With so many high-quality shows ending or getting cancelled recently (Friends, Frasier, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel), and with the decline in quality of many others (The West Wing, Smallville), not to mention the egregious rise of turgid and tasteless "reality" programming, I'd just about written off TV as an entertainment medium. I was seriously considering ditching my TV and cable subscription in favour of my computer screen and broadband Internet connection. Then along comes "Lost". I missed the first few episodes, but was able to catch up thanks to BitTorrent. Now I'm hooked. There are several things to like about this show, but here's a quick list:1) Outstanding, intelligent, layered writing. There are multiple mysteries here, and for every answer we get, more questions emerge.2) Rich, complex characters. Just when you think you've got a character pegged, you find out something new about them that's often surprising or even shocking. I'm enjoying watching the various relationships emerge and develop. 3) Strong performances. This is a remarkable cast of mostly journeymen actors with a couple of newcomers, and they're all turning in star-making work. Even some of the cameos have featured recognizeable, talented actors (e.g. Mira Furlan, Victoria Hamel). 4) A mysterious and fascinating setting. Of the four main story elements you learned in school, plot, character, theme, and setting, the latter is often the poor, neglected cousin. Not here. The island is dangerous, beautiful, creepy, and undeniably intriguing. It's like a character unto itself. Part of the fun of this show will be unravelling the Island's secrets.5) Thematic depth. This isn't just a soap opera on a desert island. There are rich metaphors and themes to be mined here, such as on the challenges of morality; on the nature of communities and civilization; on our relationship with nature/the environment; and on spirituality, even mysticism, as well.I'm grateful to see this show is a hit. Too often lately I've committed to a quality show early on ("Wonderfalls" being the most recent and much-lamented example) only to have a jittery network cancel it prematurely. I'm hoping "Lost" will have a long, successful run--if its creators, cast, and crew keep up the level of quality they've shown so far, I'm sure it will.

LOST is a cool experimental TV series. It has been wrongly labeled as a simple concoction of well known stories (e.g. Lord of the flies, The beach). Due to its complexity, you feel lost at times.The unnumbered flashbacks, which were conceived as a novelty at first, have turned off many unprepared viewers. A few flashbacks didn't seem to contribute to the overall plots and only broke the flow of the story, especially when the viewers were eager to know more about what's happening on the island. Admittedly, they helped build the characters and explained their behaviors and the choices they made, but in a very short-lived manner. I had an impression that the series was written and rewritten as it was filmed. There were very few plots that ran through the show. At times, the characters, instead of the stories, explained the rationales to 'patch up' the illogical parts. The quirky, thus interesting, characters dominated the latter part of the show and initial two main characters seemed to fade into the background. A nice balance could have been better. There were a lot of character pruning throughout the show. Introducing new characters at the latter part of the show was a mistake. It only confused the viewers. This shows that the script probably wasn't complete before the shooting had started.LOST played with the ideas of alternate realities, time travel, multi-worlds, life after death, and spiritual worlds. This complicated the plots but I commend the bravery and its nice execution. For me, the most fascinating thing about LOST is the philosophical questions it imposed on us: Do you have somewhere or someone to go back to? How far are you willing to go to save yourself or your loved ones? Is having a faith, blind or not, better than having no faith at all? Can you really get away from your past? Do you really know the people you wholeheartedly trust?If you like multi-plotted stories like LOST with twisted endings, you will love 'Somewhere carnal over 40 winks'.

I'm only on the first season and I'm already loving this series. Already, it's filled with mystery and unanswered questions which have left me desperately wanting more. Pretty much every episode always ends in an interesting cliffhanger. I can't wait to see this series. I think you should give it a try, although you may not be a fan if you're into something more fastpaced or hyper-realistic. Nonetheless, the secrets behind the island and its inahbitants - including the survivors - make the watch

One of my all time favorite television series that I have watched. The reason being is because, if you are particularly into mystery and that kind of things then this show potrays it brilliantly. I highly recommend to give this TV show a go.

This TV show was super mind bogeling! i just finnished it and it is 10 minutes untill midnight... aka for me today that would be CHRISTMAS! This show is well worth anybodys time. It is a little old but not that much. Some bad animations but who really gives a crap. This show kept me up late every night thinking about what was going to happen next! Awesome show, i loved it! MERRY CHRISTMAS!
