[MAY BE SPOILERS] Phillip J. Fry is a bumbling pizza delivery boy in 1999 New York City. When delivering to a phony call, he accidentally falls into a cryogenics chamber and is frozen for 1000 years. He awakens in 2999 New New York and meets all sorts of weird people: cyclops Leela, frustrated android Bender, his great, great, etc. nephew Dr. Hubert Farnsworth, crustacheon humanoid Dr. Zoidberg, laid-back model Amy Wong, and more! Fry joins Bender and Leela on their Planet Express trips, whether it's delivering to the water people or something else to a galaxy far, far away. Fry sees all sorts of cool things he's never seen before and doesn't care a bit that his old friends and family were dead. I like the episode where Fry becomes Bender's roommate in his tiny robot apartment or the one where Amy and Fry go for a drive on Mercury and run out of gas, or the one where Nibbler saves the world from brain spawn or even the one where Leela finds Nibbler! Having said that, listen here! I don't really like Futurama. I like the Simpsons, but not Futurama! "Why?" You ask. "This show rocks." "Futurama is king!" Well if you'll SHUT UP a moment, I'll tell you why I don't like this show: it's not very funny to me, I don't care for alot of the humor, why must the planets be called something like Blaznor 8 or Zeenon 9? Sure there might be planets out there like that but be original. Plus, I highly doubt the world will be like that in 3000. Maybe in 4000 or 5000, but 3000 is too soon. But then I got to thinking that Futurama is only science fiction, depicting a make- believe future, not the real one! But anyway, sadly there is no future for Futurama for I've heard it's been canceled. In my opinion, good move Fox! I don't like Professor Farnsworth or Leela! I've lost what little respect I already had for Katey Sagal! Now that I've said this, DO NOT, I repeat, DO NOT send me any more e-mails or private messages chastising me for my opinion!! DON'T! 'Futurama' is a show that has many appealing features - some glorious animation, some snappy dialogue, some humorous characters.... but overall whenever I see this show it leaves me cold.Why? It's probably summed up by a scene I briefly saw set in a futuristic courtroom where everything was as it would be today except the stereotyped brash, Southern lawyer was in the form of a chicken (not dissimilar to Foghorn Leghorn).And that's the whole problem with the show - it's hard to tell sometimes whether its set several centuries in the future or today. An animated show set so far in the future has potentially fantastic places it could go - yet Futurama explores none of these possibilities. It's creators are content with reeling on lame parodies (like the Southern chicken, Madison Square Garden has become Madison Cube Garden). Some of these can be funny but when there's little else to the show it quickly becomes hollow.The structure of society and the characters that inhabited it have changed zero. The most imaginative futuristic stories - humorous or not - think of the way society could alter in that period, not by merely imitating the present.As a result, Futurama is nothing more then a flashy version of another futuristic animated series from the 1960s, the Jetsons. While that cartoon show was set centuries in the future, it had the same socio-family stereotypes that existed in American society during that time - the family with the male breadwinner, the homemaker wife, the battles in the office between the worker and the boss, etc...The great strength of 'The Simpsons' was that it was far more ambitious then just being a jazzed-up version of an old Hanna-Barabera cartoon. Its best episodes were able to satirise many aspects of modern society while delivering good characterisations and plenty of humour at the same time.Unfortunately, Futurama displays none of these qualities as it takes all the easy crowd-pleasing short cuts and adds up to an insubstantial experience.

Boy, am I glad you can't be forced to watch anything.

"Futurama" has always been a difficult show for me to watch. I did not watch it while it was still on the air, and I was not truly aware of the show until it had been canceled. Doing some searching, I have found that a great deal of people are quite angry that the show was taken off of the air and wish for it to come back. Well, I have watched plenty of "Futurama" reruns, and I honestly think it was smart to take the show off of the air.Created by Matt Groening (the same man who created "The Simpsons", my favorite television show), "Futurama" is an animated show that is based on the premise of a man named Phillip J. Fry who works at a pizza shop and is accidentally cryogenic ally frozen. Being thawed out 1,000 years later, Fry is entered into the future of Earth. Taken in by a corporation known as Planet Express, Fry encounters a variety of odd characters, from his distant nephew, who is an old professor, to the one-eyed Leela, the captain of the ship that belongs to Planet Express. Other notable characters include the alcoholic robot Bender, Jamaican executive Hermes, lobster-like Dr. Zoidberg, who is systematically disliked by others on the show, and Amy, but I am not sure exactly what she does on the show. In the end, it does not really matter. Perhaps I simply did not describe the show very well, but you have probably already seen the show anyway. I am just setting the premise so I can show why so much potential in this show went untapped.One of the show's biggest problems is that it is far too predictable in so many different ways. Jokes, plots, and conversations in "Futurama" are just trite, being used in countless sitcoms in the past. If this movie is set in the future, why is everything just like it is today, except for having robots and spaceships? Still, the show can still manage to create somewhat interesting characters, but their antics grow old fast, mainly because they do the same thing in nearly every episode. Upon watching several episodes of Futurama, I soon grew tired of Bender's kleptomania and alcoholism, Leela's ability to fight just about everything with karate, and Hermes is just one of the worse characters I have seen in any show, animated or not.Still, those are not the only problems that plague this show. Upon watching "Futurama", I am confused as to what direction the show is trying to take. It is certainly not smart enough to be a clever satire on society (which I think is meant to be its main direction), nor is it dark and risqué enough to be any kind of black humour, or all out funny enough to just be a simple comedy. Instead, it tries to mix all of these elements together, with poor results. Not to say that the show can never produce funny or clever episodes, because it can, but it does not do it nearly often enough.Honestly, I was expecting more from a show created by the man that brought the world "The Simpsons". I already know that a view like this will not be popular, but it is what I really think about "Futurama". Hearing that the show will be brought back on the air on "Comedy Central", I am a little disappointed, as I had hoped the show would remain off of the air. Still, at least the fans who want this show back so badly will get what they want, at least. I suppose they have waited long enough, though I may never understand what they see in "Futurama".

Futurama is the second series by Matt Groening. Now when I was watching The Simpsons one idea was that why we can't see this guy more, why he is only behind a widely known TV series while poking some other people. But with Futurama I say he is (OK, was) unleashed.Futurama deals with moron pizza delivery boy Fry being accidentally frozen and wake up 1000 years after into a whole new world. Strangely this is not the story of the Fry's adaptation, because he is not. He is still the same stupid guy back in 20th century.. Maybe a little improvement but that's all.. Then we meet Leela, who is the only cyclops alien in the whole galaxy (as far as she knows), orphan, different from others. Last but not least the main cast includes Bending Unit Bender which is a robot. Nice thing about him is that the general idea of a robot is that they are always serving and helping and supporting, but Bender does not. He lies, cheats, steals...Then the supporting cast has the cute and horny Chinese (or Japanese?) Amy, Fry's great^20 nephew professor Farnsworth with crazy inventions but an unstable mind, doctor Zoidberg that mastered on human medical but not a human itself, Jamaican manager who is a qualified limbo master and denying machine...I like Futurama because it creates an unexpected, yet tempting future and combines it with cunning references and a strange comedy style. It's range of poking is 'wider'..Futurama can turn any depressed mood to a happy mood if just the watcher accepts the fact that show does not require a deep concentration for the whole concept, but likes to catch it slowly by using trivial extras and nicely planted sci-fi references.This show was one of the best. Ever. It's a pity that it was canceled an I pity the fool who canceled it. Such things should continue till the end of time.. Thanks to the makers of DVD, they partially do.Futurama is mandatory for all sci-fi and comedy lovers, and highly recommended for everyone else.

I am a huge fan of THE SIMPSONS, the funniest show to ever be on television. When I heard Matt Groening was behind FUTURAMA I was excited...but not TOO excited because I didn't think it would be as good as THE SIMPSONS (I mean...what COULD be?) The first episode of FUTURAMA I was not all that impressed. But by the fourth episode (LOVES LABOURS LOST IN SPACE where Leela sleeps with Zap Brannigan) they had me: I was hooked.This show may not be as laugh-out-loud funny as THE SIMPSONS but it is funny, clever, well-written and well "acted". The cast does a great job, especially those who have to do multiple voices (I will make special mention of Billy West here who does the voice of main character Fry. I was surprised to find out he does a lot of other characters too: Zoidberg and Farnsworth to mention just a few).If your not familiar the story goes like this: Philip Fry is a pizza delivery boy (or should I say "pizza delivery Man"...he's in his 20's although at times acts more like a teen than a grown-up) who is sort of a Born Loser type. He's working on New Years Eve (he runs into his girlfriend Michelle going to a New Years Eve party with another guy and "begins to suspect she's cheating") and ends up making a delivery to a cryogenic freezing lab. He accidentally freezes himself and when he's found and thawed out its New Years Eve 3000. In a way this sucks because everyone he knows is long dead. But in a way its good because its a second chance for him to start life new and maybe be not such a loser this time around. Apparently after they thaw you out and probe you they insert a chip in your hand that helps place you in your field of expertise for a job. His chip is "Delivery Boy" and he doesn't want it so he is trying to avoid the sexy one-eyed alien woman Leela whose job it is to make sure he gets his chip put in. When he's notified he has a great-great-great-great (keep going) nephew named Professor Farnsworth he goes to seek him out. He goes to what he thinks is a pay phone booth and its actually a suicide machine...thats where he meets Bender a wise-ass,drinking,smoking robot who wants to kill himself because his main purpose is to aid in the making of suicide machines. The two of them try to escape Leela and when she finally catches up to them she admits she doesn't like her job either so now the three of them seek out Professor Farnsworth to see if they can work for him.He runs an intergalactic delivery service and works with once-limbo champion Hermes, a rich girl intern named Amy,and a lobster-man doctor named Zoidberg. I feel funny pointing this out, but I will anyway: There's always a big to do about shows today not having interracial characters as friends working together and FUTURAMA definitely goes beyond the call of duty in that area. We have single white male Fry, white Cyclops alien/mutant female Leela, Asian female Amy, Senior citizen white male Farnsworth, African American male Hermes, male robot Bender as well as male crustacean Zoideberg! And they all work together wonderfully (and although they make a lot of rude jokes at each others expense you can tell they all really love each other! And this is a cartoon, folks!)A lesson to be learned: if these people can get along, cant we?)This show isn't on FOX Sundays anymore although there is rumor that it might come back. A cable station shows re-runs and they have Seasons One, Two, Three and Four on DVD box sets. I bought myself the first season and my six year old daughter stole it from me! I quickly bought her the other three seasons and she's a real devotee now: watches an hour of FUTURAMA every night before she goes to sleep. We watch it together...which is a nice summary...FUTURAMA is a show both adults and children can enjoy. Here's hoping it makes a return.Out of 5 stars: ***** 5 stars
